Instow and its part in the life of John Sweet

1943

This is probably the earliest picture I can find, me at 5 months old on the front lawn of a bungalow called "Kowloon" which was next door too Grove Cottages. Mum and me moved there while Dad was still away at the war.
The place was owned by Will Ralph, who I knew as grandfather Ralph. I understand that he and his brother use to operate one of the last "Stage coaches" which ran from Hunters Inn near Lynton to Clovelly. When the coach line finished her retired to Kowloon. He was never married but must have had a great love that never eventuated. She gave him a gold signet ring inscribed with an entwined "WR" on the outside and "DA 1933" on the inside. I still have that ring to this day.
